How to write product descriptions for a small shop
A repeatable method for writing product descriptions that answer real buyer questions, not just sound persuasive, with a template and worked example.
What you'll have at the end
By the end of this guide you'll have a reusable product description template, one fully finished description for a real product in your shop, and a short checklist of the practical questions shoppers abandon over when a page doesn't answer them. This isn't about writing more persuasive copy for its own sake. It's about writing descriptions that actually answer what a person standing in front of your product, on their phone, with eight seconds of patience, needs to know before they decide.
Before you start
- One real product to write about first, ideally your best seller or the one you're proudest of, so you're not inventing details for something you don't know well.
- The practical facts for that product: size or dimensions, materials, care instructions if relevant, what it's for, and anything that makes it different from similar things.
- Your actual shipping and returns policy, even just roughly, since Step 4 asks you to link or reference it rather than make shoppers dig for it.
- A phone, because you'll check the finished description on one before calling it done. Most of your buyers will read it there first.
Step 1: Write the payoff sentence first, not last
People scan rather than read. Eye-tracking research from the Nielsen Norman Group has consistently found that people read at most 20 to 28% of the words on an average page, moving through content in a rough "F" shape: a horizontal sweep near the top, a shorter sweep further down, then a vertical scan down the left edge. The practical implication for a product description is blunt: whatever matters most has to be in the first sentence, because a meaningful share of readers won't get past it.
Write one sentence that states what the product is and the single biggest reason someone would want it, before you write anything else. Everything that follows supports that sentence; nothing should be more important than it.
