Two-minute tutorial: opening the free chat box

How to open ChatGPT or Claude for the first time and send your first message, no setup required

If you've never used an AI chat tool before, the hardest part is usually just starting. There's no software to install, no manual to read, and no setting to get wrong. You open a page, and a box is sitting there waiting for you to type something. It looks almost too plain to be useful, which is part of why people put off trying it.

Do this now

  1. On your phone or laptop, open a browser and go to chatgpt.com or claude.ai. Either one works the same way for what you're about to do, and you don't need to pick carefully — you can always try the other later and see which one you prefer.
  2. Pick the free plan. No card is needed to start, and the free version is more than enough for the kind of everyday writing task you'll use it for — invoices, emails, updates, and the like.
  3. You'll see one big empty box, usually with a blinking cursor. That's the whole tool — there's no menu to explore, no settings page, and nothing to configure before you begin.
  4. Type in plain English, the way you'd text a helpful colleague who happens to be good with words, then press enter. No special phrasing, no commands, no formatting required.

Try this

Write a short, polite email telling a client their delivery is running two days late.

What you'll get back

Within a few seconds you'll have a full draft sitting in front of you — a complete, readable email with a greeting, the actual news, and a sign-off. It won't sound robotic, and it won't read like it came from a template, either.

Read it over, swap in the real names and dates, change a word or two if something doesn't sound like you, and it's ready to send. That's the entire loop: type what you need in plain words, get something usable back, adjust it lightly, send it. Once that first message goes through, you've already learned most of what there is to know about using the tool for everyday writing — everything after this is just more practice with the same simple habit.

The shortcut: use the ready-made helper
